7 Predictors of Job Loss Risk
Jan 28, 2024Over the course of my career, I’ve experienced job loss three different times. I’ve also worked in an organization that went through 13 layoffs in less than three years, and later, as a manager, I was responsible for helping make the difficult decisions that impacted others’ livelihoods.
Those experiences provided a clear and lasting lesson:
Layoffs are rarely sudden events. They are usually preceded by identifiable signals.
Through firsthand experience and research, I’ve learned that career stability today requires more than strong performance alone — it requires awareness, preparation, and proactive decision-making.
Here are 7 key predictors that may indicate elevated job loss risk:
1️⃣ A decline in personal performance or attendance
Missed deadlines, increased errors, extended absences, or negative feedback can increase vulnerability.
2️⃣ Ongoing financial strain at the company
Missed earnings, budget reductions, hiring freezes, or repeated restructurings often precede workforce reductions.
3️⃣ A noticeable reduction in workload or responsibilities
Being quietly sidelined, having hours reduced, or seeing contractors replace full-time roles can be meaningful indicators.
4️⃣ Increased micromanagement or formal performance scrutiny
Heightened oversight, detailed documentation, or persistent criticism may signal concern about role continuity.
5️⃣ Leadership changes, particularly a new manager
When the leader who hired you departs, roles are often reassessed and teams restructured.
6️⃣ Shifts in executive messaging or company outlook
Conflicting, vague, or pessimistic language from senior leadership can signal impending change.
7️⃣ An acquisition by private equity or a competitor
These transitions frequently result in cost-cutting and role consolidation.
The reality of today’s workplace is clear:
Organizational loyalty has changed, and job security can no longer be assumed.
However, awareness creates advantage. When professionals understand the signals early, they can respond strategically — strengthening their position, expanding their network, and preparing options before urgency sets in.
I created this video to help professionals recognize these indicators and take control of their career trajectory with confidence and intention.
Know the signs. Prepare early. Protect your career.
