5 Things I Learned: Lessons That Changed Me
Nov 22, 2023
To be successful in two of the hardest job searches of my life, I had to learn something that didn’t come naturally at first:
I had to keep moving forward — even when nothing was working.
Even when I was facing setbacks.
Even when the doubt was loud.
Even when the pressure felt unbearable.
One of those job searches happened in mid-2020 during the pandemic, when hiring froze, fear was everywhere, and job seekers were competing in one of the most uncertain markets in modern history.
There were days when it felt like the effort wasn’t worth it.
Days when I questioned my skills.
Days when I wondered if things would ever turn around.
But looking back now, I realize something powerful:
✅ Those seasons didn’t just test me — they built me.
And if you’re in a hard job search right now, I want to share what I gained through those experiences — because it might encourage you to keep going.
Here’s how I grew during those difficult job searches:
1) I became more creative
When the competition is high, “normal” doesn’t get noticed.
I had to learn how to stand out — not by being flashy, but by being intentional:
-
trying different outreach approaches
-
improving how I communicated my value
-
learning how to tell my story better
-
experimenting with bold strategies that felt uncomfortable at first
The job search forced me to become more resourceful than I’d ever been.
2) I became more tenacious
I didn’t have the luxury of quitting.
I kept going because I knew my family depended on my income.
That pressure was real — and it shaped me into someone who doesn’t stop just because something is hard.
Because here’s the truth:
You don’t have to feel confident to be consistent.
You just have to keep showing up.
3) I learned the power of patterns
Over time I started seeing things clearly:
-
what moved people
-
what got attention
-
what turned into interviews
-
what wasted time
-
what helped recruiters engage
-
what messaging worked…and what didn’t
That skill — pattern recognition — didn’t just help me land a job.
It helped me across my entire business career afterward.
4) I became more aware of job seekers and their struggle
Before going through it, I didn’t fully understand the emotional toll.
Now I do.
Job searching isn’t just about résumés and interviews.
It’s about:
-
rejection that feels personal
-
silence that creates anxiety
-
fear of falling behind
-
pressure to stay “positive” even when you’re discouraged
Because of that, I’ve become more intentional about helping job seekers whenever I can — because no one should have to navigate that alone.
5) I learned not to be over-dependent on any employer
This might be one of the biggest lessons of all:
A job is important — but it’s not permanent security.
The market changes. Leadership changes. Companies change.
And sometimes you can do everything right and still find yourself needing a new opportunity.
So, I learned to:
-
keep my network strong
-
stay ready
-
keep my skills sharp
-
and remain prepared for change
The most powerful job search strategy is being ready before you need it.
If you're job searching right now, here’s what I want you to remember:
🔹 You’re not behind. You’re building resilience.
🔹 You’re not failing. You’re learning what works.
🔹 You’re not stuck. You’re in a season that’s shaping you.
And one day — sooner than you think — you’ll look back and realize:
This process changed you in ways that made you stronger, sharper, and more prepared than ever.
Keep going. Keep pushing. Keep showing up.
Even if the results aren’t immediate.
Because momentum is created by consistency — not motivation.
And your breakthrough is often closer than it feels.
